The air was sucked from her lungs, leaving her gasping.

It had been weeks since she’d entered the mortal realm, and even though her heart ached for her mate every single one of those days, she wasn’t prepared for the onslaught of their bond snapping back into place.

Her tie to August wasn’t just emotional. It was visceral and all-consuming. Reuniting with that part of her soul left her wanting to claw out her own heart to soothe the aching organ.

But it wasn’t just their bond she missed. She missed the man too. In everything she did, she remembered the little things that made their relationship special. The heat in his eyes when she walked into the room, the way he slapped her ass when she got out of the shower, the errant touches and the subtle glances stolen between them that meant nothing and everything in a single moment. It might not have always been sunshine and roses, but he was the constant in her days.

Emery blinked back the tears as she reached out and caressed his side of the bond. She imagined it was what people felt like when they lost a limb. The phantom pains that lingered just out of reach. There was no cure except to accept that, for the time being, there was no way to cure the loss.

And yet somehow, she felt closer to him than ever, as if due to having been so completely cut off from him all these weeks the phantom pains brought a comfort that didn’t make sense to her.

Malcolm stepped up beside her and rubbed a hand between her shoulder blades. “Are you okay?”

Emery looked up at him with misted eyes, the crescent moon in the sky behind him taunting her. The moon controlled the tides, tethered to the earth as its mate. Her moon was absent from her sky. She chewed her lip, unable to answer his question with words for fear she’d lose it. Instead, she nodded her head and pressed forward to where Dorian stood with Lily and Bronwyn, surrounded by every witch, vampire, and wolf who came with them to Enchanth, as well as those who had joined them since.

They should have stayed behind; as it was, being in the mortal realm with no protection against Sloane made them sitting ducks, but she couldn’t bear to take this moment away from them. This spell was the beginning of something new for their people. It was a small win, but a win they needed when everything else seemed a bit hopeless.

And August wasn’t there.

She pushed the thought from her head and crossed the clearing. Lina’s sweet laugh caught her ear, and she glanced to where Cosmina stood holding her daughter. Emery instantly abandoned her need to be beside Lily and Bronwyn as they completed the spell in favor of holding her daughter close.

The air around them was charged with magic and the nervousness of everyone as they congregated around Malcolm and Lily. Emery forced her lips to remain smiling even though she couldn’t help the jealousy flaring in her chest.
